Want to create MIC linked to class characteristic without entering selected set

Hello SAP Experts

We have created class characteristic of type ‘CHAR’ without entering  selected set reason being  requirement is to enter actual value (user don’t know value in advance)  while doing result recording. If we assign the selected set we will be limited with values available in catalog only.

For e.g. values may be 1A, 2A, 99Z, 999C etc.

But SAP is throwing standard error ‘To link a master inspection characteristic with a class characteristic of type "CHAR", a selected set must be entered in the class characteristic’

Requirement is that actual values must be recorded during result recording and passed to batch class

Any idea why SAP has this restriction & any substitute to meet our requirement?

Note – We also tried going to Class Characteristic ->Values tab->Other Value check->Allowed values with Additional Values checked but as per standard SAP o link a master inspection characteristic with a class characteristic of type "CHAR", a selected set must be entered in the class characteristic
